note = "Funding Information: Coburn instead established his institute (RFRI) at NUMS in Chicago in early 1947, agreeing that all funding would be acquired from outside grant and contract sources. In April 1948, Jones, now Director of the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation, wrote to indicate rejection of Coburn's grant application. In October 1949 Coburn wrote to Jones (“Dear Duckett”) inquiring “whether the foundation is still making grants for basic research in the field of rheumatic fever…. I should like to make another application if you feel that this is wise. Any advice that you can give me on this matter will be deeply appreciated.” Jones{\textquoteright} response is not available, but in December 1949, Coburn again wrote “Dear Duckett: I wish to thank you for paying us a visit….When our new units are completed I shall write to you and apply for a three year grant…. [I] hope that some of the national money from rheumatic fever may be distributed outside the State of New York.” Details regarding Jones{\textquoteright} Chicago visit are lacking, but Coburn's frustration regarding funding is suggested by the latter comment.
